I’m currently working on a book about the unscripted, chaotic mess that is freelancing. It is for every freelancer I’ve interviewed who told me, “my career is weird and I am not sure how useful to you I’ll be.” In truth, all of these careers operated in a kind of isolation where people are trying to make sense of the disappearing career ladders, the promise of stable income or reliable health insurance, and the story that they, too, can be entrepreurial heroes if they try hard enough. Everyone feels weird and unusual because there is no playbook – we’re all learning to adapt to the changing labor market in real time. And it’s hard! When many freelancers don’t reach a level of CEO-level confidence, steady and reliable income, or the financial success they expected when they imagined their future careers – they turn their doubts inside themselves. This is a book about how every freelance career has its quirks – but there are some patterns to the chaos. I offer insights from 138 successful freelancers who have made it work, even with their doubts that they are building a successful career.
